Our home is in Friuli Venezia Giulia, on the border with Slovenia, in the Colli Orientali. The vineyards are located on sunny hillsides, their roots sunk into earth composed of that which is known as ponca in the Friulian dialect, an ancient marine sedimentation exceptionally rich in minerals and nutrients. It is a unique ecosystem that requires little irrigation and is an ideal soil type that gives rise to grapes with particular traits, such as their flavour and capacity for ageing.
These hills are blessed with a mild climate. Their topography favours the vines that flourish sheltered by the Julian Alps from the cold winds that descend from the north-east, while receiving temperate breezes from the south that rise up from the Adriatic Sea.
A sublime combination, perfect for white grape varieties.
The vineyards of Spessa are our home and surround the winery and are in the Colli Orientali between the Natisone and Judrio rivers, a stone’s throw from Cividale. A perfect microclimate means that the indigenous grape varieties thrive here, such as Friulano, known as the King of the Hills, Ribolla Gialla, Picolit and for the reds, Pignolo.
The Ipplis Hills
The Ipplis hillside is exposed to the sun and are planted with our white grape indigenous grape varieties like the Malvasia. Some of the oldest rootstocks are up to 100 years old. This terroir is also home to Sauvignon, which at Ipplis is loaded with freshness and aroma.
The Novacluzzo Hills
The vineyards of Spessa are our home and surround the company’s headquarters. They are situated in the Colli Orientali between the Natisone and Judrio Rivers, a stone’s throw from Cividale. Here, the quality of the terroir, formed by layers of marl and sandstone (ponca), the purity of the air and the south/south-east exposure of the slopes create a perfect microclimate for indigenous grape varieties such as Friulano “King of the Hills”, Ribolla Gialla, Picolit and, for the reds, Pignolo.
Casali Pasch
An ancient farmhouse that includes a traditional wine cellar dominates the land that surrounds it. Fresh, elegant and aromatic white and red grape varieties are cultivated here, including Pinot Grigio and Cabernet, as well as other international varieties.
